According to the Alzheimer’s Association, “More than 60 percent of those with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia will wander, and if a person is not found within 24 hours, up to half of individuals who wander will suffer serious injury or death.”
That is a frightening statistic for anyone who has a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or some other form of cognitive impairment. We don’t always have the luxury of being able to be with our loved one 24 hours a day. There are many safety tips to help keep them from wandering, but it just isn’t always enough. Even the Silver Alert system, a valuable tool which started in Colorado in 2006, is a reactionary measure that goes into effect after you have reported your loved one missing.

Wear purple in June to support Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month to get involved and raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Everyone who has a brain is at risk to develop Alzheimer’s, a disease that is often misunderstood.
